If you're looking for one of the best Fourth of July celebrations in Western Kentucky, look no further than Freedom Fest 2026 in Murray, Kentucky. Every year, our community comes together to celebrate America's independence with a full day of family-friendly activities, patriotic traditions, and one of the area's most anticipated fireworks shows.
Whether you're a longtime Murray resident or visiting Kentucky Lake for the holiday weekend, Freedom Fest is the perfect way to celebrate.
Freedom Fest Kicks Off Friday, July 3
The celebration actually starts the day before. At 11:00 AM, WKMS airs a live reading of the Declaration of Independence during Sounds Good, featuring members of the Capt. Wendell Oury Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution — a meaningful way to start the holiday weekend. That evening, head to the Murray Art Guild's new building from 6:00–8:00 PM for their Summer Art Party, with live music, hands-on activities, and food and drinks available for purchase.
Start Your Independence Day in Downtown Murray
July 4th itself starts early. At 7:00 AM, the Murray Downtown Farmers Market opens at 5th & Maple Streets — the largest farmers market in Western Kentucky, with fresh produce, baked goods, artisans, and specialty drinks before the parade begins. Just bring cash. At the same time, Boy Scout Troop 45 hosts their 51st annual Gary Taylor Memorial Breakfast at First United Methodist Church ($10 tickets, kids under 5 eat free) — a Murray tradition that's been going strong for over half a century.
If you're feeling ambitious, The Main Street Mile kicks off at 8:30 AM along the parade route, with registration and packet pickup starting at 7:30 AM at US Bank. Or just grab your lawn chair early and cheer the runners on as they head toward the downtown square.
Parking tip: Downtown fills up fast on Freedom Fest morning. Look for parking at any of the large churches downtown — First United Methodist, First Baptist, or First Christian Church.
Let Freedom Ring & the FNB Bank Freedom Fest Parade
At 9:15 AM, the America250 Calloway Committee hosts a community bell-ringing on the Calloway County Courthouse lawn — small bells are handed out to community members to ring right before the parade kicks off.
Then at 9:30 AM, the main event: the FNB Bank Freedom Fest Parade rolls down Main Street, starting at 10th Street and Memorial Baptist Church and ending at Cherry Street. Local businesses, organizations, schools, churches, first responders, and community groups fill the route with patriotic spirit — and yes, the kazoo band is performing again this year.
Families line the streets with lawn chairs, kids wait eagerly for candy, and neighbors gather to celebrate together. It's a tradition that captures everything people love about Murray.
Family Fun Throughout the Day
Once the parade wraps up, the celebration continues:
- 1:00 PM — The Murray Bank Bomb-Pop-Up at Central Park Pool: free bomb-pops for everyone, with the TMB Ice Cream Machine serving festive treats just outside the pool gates from 1:00–1:30 PM. Beat the July heat and cool off.
- 7:00 PM — MSU Town & Gown Community Band and Chorus inside Lovett Auditorium: a free concert of patriotic music, with the added bonus of air conditioning on a hot summer night.
Many visitors also spend the afternoon enjoying nearby Kentucky Lake, shopping local businesses, or dining at one of Murray's outstanding restaurants before returning downtown for the evening's grand finale.
The Murray Bank Fireworks Extravaganza
The celebration concludes with the spectacular Murray Bank Fireworks Extravaganza at 9:00 PM — one of the largest fireworks displays in the region. The show can be viewed anywhere along Highway 641 North near Kroger, Walmart, or Lowe's, so you've got plenty of good vantage points without needing to fight for a single spot downtown.
It's the perfect ending to an unforgettable Independence Day celebration.
Planning a Lake Weekend Around Freedom Fest
If you're coming in from out of town, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley are both within about 30 minutes of downtown Murray, making it easy to spend the day on the water and still catch every Freedom Fest event without feeling rushed. Plenty of visitors build a full weekend around it — morning parade, afternoon at the lake, back downtown for fireworks.
